A Story Born from the Storm
In a farming district in the hills of Jamaica, Hurricane Melissa destroys crops, floods fields and damages the local school. The farmers plan to import new seed, but cross-border rules and long delays make that slow and uncertain, and heirloom varieties passed down for generations cannot be replaced at all.
Then Brer Anancy notices a surviving gungo pea plant drying in the sun, and realizes every pod holds the next harvest. He asks each farmer to leave two or three of their best plants to go to seed. When Brer Tiger scoffs, Anancy bets him that the seeds from a single pumpkin can fill his hat.
Who wins the bet? And how does one small idea grow into a seed library that travels across the Caribbean? Children will find out on every page.
